Here’s something I’ve noticed over the years.
You can’t be relaxed
and
not be telling the truth.
You might not be lying.
You might not be doing anything wrong.
But if you’re not quite telling it how it is, something tightens.
Just a little.
And that little bit matters.
Why Telling the Truth Makes You Stronger
I’ve spent years running retreats and playing with simple experiments.
One of my favourites is a kind of informal lie detector test.
Say your real name.
You’re solid.
Say a name that isn’t yours.
You wobble.
Say “I’m fine” when you’re not.
Weaker.
Say “I’m a bit flat today, actually.”
Stronger. Grounded. More here.
The body knows.
Not in a dramatic way.
In a quiet, biological, nervous-system way.
Stress creeps in when we’re not aligned.
Relaxation returns when we are.
The Cost of Not Saying What’s Real
Most of us weren’t taught to tell the truth.
We were taught not to lie.
There’s a difference.
So we learn to smooth things over.
To keep things pleasant.
To say “all good” when it isn’t.
And the pressure builds.
Inside families.
Inside organisations.
Inside ourselves.
When the truth doesn’t come out clearly, it leaks out sideways.
Tension.
Defensiveness.
Acting out.
Physical tightness.
None of this is personal.
It’s mechanical.
Clarity Is Kinder Than Pretending
When I say tell it how it is, I don’t mean being brutal.
I’m not suggesting you walk into the corner shop and critique the shopkeeper’s lifestyle choices.
I mean clarity.
Being honest with yourself first.
Then allowing that honesty to meet the world gently.
“I’m tired.”
“I don’t know.”
“I need help.”
“I’m not actually okay with this.”
These aren’t dramatic statements.
They’re relaxing ones.
Why Relaxers Practise Truth
Relaxation isn’t something you earn once life behaves.
It’s something you practise while life does what it does.
Truth helps with that.
When you tell it how it is, your system settles.
Your breathing changes.
Your nervous system softens.
You become easier to be with.
Including for yourself.
And life, strangely, tends to cooperate more.
A Small Experiment
Try this today.
Finish this sentence a few times, quickly, without thinking too much:
“Truth is, I’m…”
Notice what happens when you let it land.
Notice what softens.
That softening is relaxation.
Want to Go Deeper?
This is the kind of thing we explore inside The Relaxers.
Not fixing yourself.
Not forcing calm.
Just understanding how relaxation actually works in real life.
