tough times therapy
Support during the coronavirus crisis from John & Gaia, therapists & creators of 'F**k It'THESE ARE TOUGH TIMES –
HERE’S SOME HELP GETTING THROUGH
John & Gaia, therapists and authors of the bestselling F**k It books, have years of experience helping people through tough times.
And they don’t come much tougher than this. Or on such a large scale. We might have tough times individually, but to be facing a global pandemic that threatens the health and livelihoods of millions is unprecedented.
It’s tough. It’s tough to keep up. It’s tough to process the enormity of what’s happening. It’s tough not to run away with the catastrophic possibilities. It’s tough to take one day at a time. It’s tough to be so isolated, as many people are. It’s tough to keep it together. It’s tough not to worry and let that worry spread into all your thoughts.
We’re here to help. And here’s how, over the next 8 weeks…
That’s Gaia. John was taking the photo, so he’s there, but not in it.
8 WEEKLY EVENING RETREATS
Last year we ran several online ‘Evening Retreats’: a chance to relax and get away from it all, learning from the wisdom of John & Gaia.
In these tough times, John & Gaia will be offering an online Evening Retreat every single week for eight weeks (and beyond if necessary).
That way, you’ll have regular support. You’ll learn tools that you can use during the rest of the week. You’ll have access to the Tough Times Therapy community.
And you’ll know that you have the support you need right through this tough period.
In each weekly Evening Retreat…

Relaxation
Relaxation is not just a matter of breathing deeply. It’s worth learning about how the nervous system works. It’s best to be guided into finding those particular ways that you can relax quickly and deeply.
Every week, there’ll be teaching and the experience of relaxation.
Relaxation is also good for you. It boosts your immune system and helps you heal.

Humour
These times are not funny. And we will not be giggling our way through these Evening Retreats. But there will be some lightness and humour alongside the serious teaching and the sharing and recognition of how truly difficult and challenging these times are.
Also, we all know that laughter is a very good medicine, and we could all do with supporting our health at the moment.

Connection
Much of Gaia’s approach in her ‘F**k It Be You’ work involves ‘connection’: connecting to your true feelings again beyond the adapted patterns, and then connecting with others in a true and authentic way. So we’ll connect in those two ways in these live groups, sharing our feelings, and connecting with others. Also, many studies have shown the benefit to health of connection and community.

Tools
John & Gaia have decades of experience in various therapies and practices that help support us, both mentally and physically. You will learn about deep relaxation, the energy art of Qigong, breathwork, somatic experiencing. And you can take the tools you learn out into your life with you learn the best ways to copy in these tough times.
“I am having issues with anxiety…”
“I am having issues with anxiety. My stomach is like a washing machine and I am desperately trying to distract myself so it will calm down. I want to try and relax a little with this but catastrophic thoughts are invading!” Lisa W., UK
The 8 Steps of Tough Times Therapy in 8 Weeks…
These Evening Retreat webinars are live every week.
If you miss one, there will be recordings available the next day.

STEP 1 (3 APRIL, 7pm UK)
STAYING CALM IN TOUGH TIMES
How we become calm and stay calm, even in tough times, takes a good deal of learning and practice. But this training will help you cope with these times, then be calmer too once we’re the other side of this.

STEP 2 (10 APRIL, 7pm UK)
INCREASING CONNECTION, EVEN WHEN ISOLATED
How we connect with our own feelings is then directly related to how we connect with others – reaching out and creating community that last beyond the tough times.

STEP 3 (17 APRIL, 7pm UK)
DEALING WITH FEAR (WITHOUT RUNNING AWAY)
Fear is natural. And in such tough times, there are genuine threats: to our own health and that of relatives, and other threats such as financial. You’ll learn how to deal with fear, without running away.

STEP 4 (24 APRIL, 7pm UK)
WHAT GETS TRIGGERED AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT
Such tough times wash away our habitual coping mechanisms. Everything is more raw and edgy. And we’re likely to be triggered in a variety of ways. Here’s how to face that triggering and deal with it.

STEP 5 (30 APRIL, 7pm UK)
SELF-KINDNESS IN TIMES OF MASS CRISIS
It’s hard to be kind on ourselves in the best of times. We tend to be hardest on ourselves. So under such pressure in these tough times, self-kindness becomes key and a skill (and habit) that will last you a lifetime.

STEP 6 (7 MAY, 7pm UK)
FEELING MY FEELINGS WITHOUT GETTING OVERWHELMED
These tough times bring up so much for us – fear, worry, frustration, maybe anger. It’s important to feel our feelings, and face them, but without overwhelming our nervous systems.

STEP 7 (13 MAY, 7pm UK)
THIS IS WHAT IT IS, AND HOW SEEING THAT CAN HELP
Tough Times Therapy is a Tough Times Training. No matter how tough it is, if you can find some acceptance of the situation, seeing that it is what it is, then this will both help through the tough times, and keep you wise when it all improves.

STEP 8 (20 MAY, 7pm UK)
FEELING THE BLISS, EVEN IN THIS
Even in tough times, there is plenty to be grateful for, plenty of beauty. But there is also bliss to find and to feel. It doesn’t exclude the pain and difficulty, it sits with it, and sometimes beneath it. And, if you can feel it during this? Well, imagine how it will be after…
“What I’m struggling with…”
“I think what I’m struggling with now is anxiety. I’m trying to be calm and mindful, pay attention to be informed but stop when I feel like I’m getting sucked in to endless scrolling.” P.W., Canada
